The Leicester Curry Awards team has been working with a number of restaurants and takeaways across the city of Leicester to provide meals to members of society that are conducting essential work during lockdown. With the current climate surrounding the Covid-19 virus, there are still a lot of essential workers that are unable to stay home from work, and therefore are putting themselves at a higher risk.
To thank these people for their hard work, the Curry Awards team has been working with the restaurants & takeaways: Chutney Ivy, Masalas Takeaway Leicester, and Mithaas Pure Vegetarian to prepare and deliver meals to a number of locations that are being staffed by these key-workers.
One of these was HM Prison Leicester. On 14th April, we prepared and delivered food to prison staff to show our appreciation and support for all of their hard work.
In response to this, the Governor of HM Prison Leicester, Jim Donaldson said: “It was a very kind, generous gesture and something that all who received a meal were very thankful for.
“Prisons are often forgotten when we talk about key workers/emergency services as what we do is hidden from public view but regardless, staff cover 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and do a fantastic job. So for you to recognise this was a real boost in these difficult times.”
We also provided meals to Age UK LeicesterShire for their continued hard work and support of the elderly across the county, many of whom are at a much higher risk of catching this virus.
Meals were also delivered to Leicestershire Police, who unsurprisingly have been working incredibly hard to keep the public as safe as possible.
Lastly, we worked with Mithaas Pure Vegetarian restaurant to bring food to key-workers at Leicester City Council. These workers are essential in ensuring that the public are kept as safe as possible.
City mayor Peter Soulsby said: “This was a lovely idea from Mithaas and the Leicester Curry Awards team, and was much appreciated by our frontline staff, who are working hard to keep the people of Leicester safe during the coronavirus lockdown.
I’m very proud of the way Leicester’s diverse communities are helping each other, as demonstrated by gestures like this and from other restaurants and takeaways such as Chutney Ivy and Masalas. By working together and supporting one another, we will all get through this difficult time.”
The Founder of the Curry Awards Romail Gulzar had this to say: “We are so incredibly thankful for all the hard work that is being done by key-workers around the city and county.
“Our team and our partners will continue to work with restaurants around the city and county to support key-workers where possible. Once again, stay healthy and stay positive. Working together in a safe and productive manner is the best way to keep our society going.”
