Fake Weddings to Holi: Leicester Students Launch Inclusive Cultural Events

A new cultural platform celebrating diversity and bringing communities together through immersive festivals has been making an impact in Leicester since its launch just seven months ago.

Founded by Leicester-based student entrepreneurs Rithika Gilda and Paramsehaj Cheema, both graduates of De Montfort University’s International Business Management course, the initiative aims to create events that make people feel at home by showcasing the rich traditions of Indian culture.

Their first event, a ‘Fake Shaadi’ or fake wedding, was inspired by a popular trend in India. The celebration recreated the grandeur of an Indian wedding with traditional attire, authentic cuisine, music, dance and elaborate decorations — but without an actual bride or groom. “It was a way for students and members of the wider community who missed the magic of Indian weddings back home to experience the joy of the season here in the UK,” said Rithika.

The platform’s mission extends beyond the Indian community, welcoming anyone interested in Indian culture.

Following the Fake Shaadi, the founders organised a charity live jamming session at De Montfort University, featuring a Bollywood singer and guitar performances, open to all music lovers free of charge.

This was followed by a Diwali house party designed to replicate the warmth and festive spirit of the festival of lights, complete with traditional decorations, sweets and snacks.

Looking ahead, the founders are preparing for one of their largest events to date: Leicester Ke Holi. Set for 28 February 2026 at The Valley Suites, the festival celebrates Holi — the Indian festival of colours — with music, dance and storytelling through vibrant colours.

“Holi is about diversity, joy and togetherness, and Leicester is the perfect city to celebrate that,” said Rithika. The event is open to everyone and is expected to attract around 400 attendees.

The Holi festival will feature elaborate decorations, food stalls, welcome drinks and a DJ line-up including London-based DJs Vishal and Kapil.

Rithika emphasised the inclusive nature of the platform’s events: “It’s not just for the Indian community. We want everyone to come and enjoy the rich culture, food, music and spirit of the festivals we celebrate. This is about bringing people together and creating a sense of home away from home.”

As Leicester continues to thrive as a diverse and culturally rich city, initiatives like this are playing a vital role in strengthening community bonds and celebrating shared experiences.
