Tributes are pouring in from around the world following the death of Reverend Jesse Jackson, the American civil rights leader, activist, and global advocate for justice, equality, and human dignity, who passed away peacefully this morning (Tuesday, February 17), at the age of 84.
In Leicester, UK, tributes have also been paid to Jackson, who visited the city in 2013. The Rushey Mead park named in his honour is unlike a traditional memorial: it features a civil rights walk around the park, showcasing milestones of the civil rights movement.

“Young people, particularly in Rushey Mead, can go to Jessie Jackson Park and walk the walk, seeing how he managed to go from someone who was denied access to books in a private library because he was Black, to a person celebrated all over the world by presidents and prime ministers,” said local organisers.
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson rose from humble beginnings to become a close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., participating in key civil rights campaigns of the 1960s. He founded Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition, later merged into the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, organisations that championed economic empowerment, voting rights, and educational opportunities for marginalised communities.
Jackson also made history in American politics as the first African American candidate to mount credible campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, inspiring future generations of political leaders. His advocacy extended internationally, addressing human rights issues across the globe.
“I was in tears when I heard the news because Reverend Jesse Jackson is the kind of person who was going to live forever, despite his illnesses, despite the challenges of his life. We always felt that he could be undefeatable as far as his health was concerned,” said Keith Vaz, former MP of Leicester, who met Mr Jackson several times throughout his political career.
“The word ‘icon’ is used quite often to describe people, but in terms of his contribution, he was iconic. What a man, what a legend, what a great individual – a heart of gold, a fighter for peace and justice the world over. We will never forget his work, his speeches, and his devotion.”
“Reverend Jackson’s passing is a profound loss. My deepest condolences go to his family, colleagues, and all who were moved by his extraordinary work and unwavering dedication to human rights,” added Suleman Nagdi, community leader in Leicester.
“In 2024, I had the privilege of receiving a Community Cohesion Award from the Jesse Jackson Foundation – an honour that remains among my most meaningful experiences. His steadfast leadership, moral courage, and compassion for humanity continue to inspire people across the world to champion fairness and understanding.”
Leaders and activists around the world have hailed Jackson’s lifelong dedication as a moral compass for justice, describing him as an enduring force for equality whose work continues to resonate across generations.
