The Brits Desi Society is set to host a historic international event in Leicester this month, celebrating the life and legacy of one of Sikhism’s most revered figures — Jassa Singh Ahluwalia (1718–1783).
The memorial event will take place on November 16 at Guru Amar Das Gurdwara, Clarendon Park Road, marking the first time such a commemoration will be held in the city.

Founded by Rishu Walia, the Brits Desi Society has been active in reengaging communities across the UK, providing cultural, social, and health-related support for people from India and other continents. What began as a local initiative in Leicester has now expanded nationwide, with active branches in Glasgow, London, and beyond.
“We have to reengage the community — through celebrations, events, or health services — especially for those who come from India and other continents,” said Walia. “This memorial is not only a celebration of Sikh heritage but also an opportunity for the wider community to come together.”
The event will honour Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, a prominent Sikh leader and Supreme Commander of the Dal Khalsa, who played a pivotal role in uniting the Sikh misls (confederacies) during the 18th century. Recognised for his courage and leadership, he was instrumental in establishing Sikh sovereignty in Punjab and earned the title ‘Bandi Chhor’ (Liberator) after rescuing thousands of Maratha women from Afghan captivity in 1761.
Attendees will also witness the launch of a new book, titled The Warrior Saint, inspired by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia’s enduring impact on Sikh history and values.
The Leicester memorial is expected to draw participants from across the globe, including guests from India, Africa, and various parts of the UK. Reflecting the inclusive mission of the Brits Desi Society, the event will welcome multi-faith representatives, including members of the Hindu, Christian, and Sikh communities.
Special guests are set to include Gurcharan Singh Gill, Advocat General, Jaipur and Mohinder. Singh Ahluwalia, Spiritual Leader and Chairman GNNSJ.
“It’s a chance for the community to unite,” added Walia, who shares the same surname lineage as the 18th-century leader. “People from all walks of life will come together to learn about Jassa Singh Ahluwalia’s contribution to Sikh history and his message of courage, unity, and compassion.”

The celebration will include talks on Jassa Singh Ahluwalia’s early life — from his humble beginnings in Punjab, where he was raised by his mother after his father’s death, to his rise as a unifying force for the Sikh community.
Through this event, the Brits Desi Society aims not only to commemorate a historical figure but also to rekindle a shared cultural spirit among diverse communities across Britain.
