Lockdown-inspired art exhibition

A call for artwork inspired by the Covid-19 lockdown has been issued in Leicester. The artwork will be place of display in the city’s New Walk Museum and Art Gallery.

The museum and galleries outreach team of Leicester city council have made this request to members of the public in the city, with the hopes that they will submit artwork in the form of digital 2D and 3D art, crafts, sculptures, paintings, drawings or any other creative pieces that have been inspired by the Leicester lockdown. Once the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery reopen for the public, these submitted pieces will go on show.

The goal is to create a record of local art and creativity during the lockdown conditions of the last four months. There has likely been more unique inspiration caused by the extended lockdown in Leicester. Many of these images are intended to be projected onto screens around the museum, including the centrepiece Victorian Gallery.

Leicester deputy city mayor for culture, leisure and sport, Cllr Piara Singh Clair, said: “The experience of lockdown has been something none of us have ever experienced before these last few months, and this exhibition will give us the chance to celebrate the creativity of the city under those restricted, and often very demanding, circumstances.

“As we all look to the future beyond lockdown conditions, this exhibition will reflect on that time and the sparks of artistic flair and creative ingenuity and that so often help us get through dark, difficult times.”

Anyone who wishes to submit a piece of artwork is free to do so via email at museums@leicester.gov.uk with the subject “Inspired by Lockdown” over the course of July and August, accompanied by their name and the title of their piece of art.
