Sir Peter Soulsby becomes a Mayor for Peace

Last week, Leicester city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby become a Mayor for Peace, a title given to mayors across the world by the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, which is calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

In August 1945, atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians and leading to the end of the Second World War. Today, mayors from both cities are calling on mayors across the world to join them in their stand, so that nuclear weapons will not be used again.

The announcement of Leicester’s inclusion in the Mayors for Peace programme came just days before Hiroshima Day on August 6.
