Unborn Baby Saved by Pioneering Operation in Leicester

A baby from Leicester underwent a life-saving operation while she was still in her mother’s womb.

The procedure to clear a blockage from the windpipe of Sienna Smith, who is now eight-months-old, was the first of its kind at Leicester’s hospitals after doctors feared she would not be able to breathe when she was born.

The delicate operation, which involved inserting a tube into the unborn baby’s throat, was also a first for consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon Javed Uddin, who had only previously observed the procedure, during his medical training.

Planning for the operation began after a swelling was spotted on Sienna’s neck at a 20-week scan.
