1914 Christmas Truce to be Remembered in Leicester

A truce which saw enemy soldiers playing football together on Christmas Day 100 years ago will be remembered at an event at Newarke Houses Museum in Leicester.

On Sunday, local historian Dr John Sutton will be exploring the story of the famous Christmas truce of 1914 during the First World War.

An unofficial and spontaneous ceasefire was called on some parts of the Western Front starting Christmas Eve.  Reports of enemies meeting between the trenches; German and British soldiers sang carols across no-man’s land, men from both sides gave each other gifts and there were even reports of a football match being played.

The talk will focus on the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, including the personal story of an ancestor who was killed on that Christmas Day.

The talk takes place from 2pm and is free to attend, but booking is essential.  For more information about the talk and to book your place, contact Newarke Houses Museum on 0116 225 4980.
