An iconic building, that many in Leicester will know is receiving a £17m development which will encompass a high-end 121-bed aparthotel, a restaurant and bar, and a start-up office space.
The new space opens up this Autumn in the Gresham building, which was home to the Fenwick department store before it closed down in June 2017. It’s expected that the area around the Gresham building and Market Street where it’s situated, will explode in popularity and become a key location in the city.
The Gresham is an iconic Grade-II listed Victorian building that was built in the 1800s by local architect Isaac Barradale for Joseph Johnsons, a local draper. In 1962, it was taken over by retailer Fenwick.
Mark Copson, director at Aimrok Holdings, the developers of the new space, said “We are delighted that The Gresham is central to the exciting renaissance taking place on Market Street and the surrounding area. It’s a great part of the city that is centrally located with excellent accessibility to all the local attractions, cultural quarter and a rapidly growing business district.
“We want The Gresham’s commercial partners to be visionary and see the potential of the surrounding vicinity which is primed to become a focal point of Leicester over the ensuing few years, as an exceptional business potential.”
Five other units on Market Street are already under offer and numerous new businesses will soon be opening – including an art gallery and a cocktail bar.
There are a number of other projects underway in the vicinity to the new Gresham development, including a redevelopment of Pilot House for hotspots and start-ups; and new residential developments including the conversion of Wellington House in Albion Street.
