Matthew W. Barzun, the U.S Ambassador to the United Kingdom paid a visit to Leicester this morning to take a look at the Richard III Visitor Centre and Leicester Cathedral.
The ambassador arrived at Leicester’s Guildhall at 11:20 with Deputy City Mayor Councillor Rory Palmer, and was greeted by Sir Peter Soulsby, who gave him a guided tour of the Richard III exhibition, followed by a tour of the Cathedral by Reverend Peter Hobson. They then headed over to the Richard III visitor centre construction site, to take a look at the site where the King was discovered. Lead archaeologist Richard Buckley from the University of Leicester explained to the Ambassador all about the dig and how the kings body was discovered.
The Ambassador said of his trip “I’ve been learning about the future of Leicester and whats happening in this great diverse city, and here in the cathedral and earlier in the guildhall leaning about its past, I think its very powerful, the combination of the rich past combined with the dynamic future”
After the visit, City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said “its a great honour to have the U.S Ambassador here in Leicester and delighted that he’s shown so much interest in the city”
“as he has said will be the case, he will be talking to colleagues back home and indeed talking to President Obama about Leicester, its something the for our city is very welcome news and very important”
