A service was held yesterday to mark the one year anniversary since sports coach Antoin Akpom was murdered.  The 20-year-old was stabbed in Kent Street in September last year during a confrontation. A teenager is serving a life sentence for his murder.

A plaque was also unveiled and balloons released at the spot where Antoin Akpom was murdered last year on September 12.  The plaque reads ‘Born with a purpose, strived for success, inspired lives’.

The service which followed was held at Disciples Fellow Ministries Church and was attended by family and friends of the sports coach.

After the service Antoins Mother, Cheryl Armatrading told Pukaar News “Its about bringing the community together, expressing a lot of love and memories together and sharing those thoughts to help his legacy live on”

“Its been difficult, its hard, its emotional, I’ve been living through the trauma of the events from Wednesday replaying in my mind, but the strength from the community and prayer from god and blessings from others is keeping me strong”

Cheryl also spoke of the charity that is being set up in Antoins name “the charity is going to be launched on the 1st November at the Peepul Centre, and what we’re going to do is bring through Antoins legacy to help others, by helping with sports, education, performing arts and on the day of the event we are going to be giving out awards to young people that have achieved throughout the year”.
