Celebrity chef Rachel Green from the Catch It! Kill It! Cook It! television show was at Leicester Market yesterday teaching children how to cook a healthy breakfast as part of Start Smart week.
The healthy eating week has been organised by Leicester City Council in conjunction with Ella’s Kitchen, whose Averting a Recipe for Disaster campaign focuses on tackling childhood obesity.
The Start Smart week will see a series of free healthy eating events taking place across the city, including 1,600 free breakfast give aways for under-fives and ‘shop with a healthy helper’ sessions, where families can get professional advise on healthy eating from a dietician.
Deputy city mayor Cllr Rory Palmer, who is responsible for health and wellbeing in the city is backing the week.
He said “we are keen to establish a new relationship between children and food and get children interested actively in healthy food, in cooking and nutrition, this is a huge challenge that we face as a society and we are determined to address that challenge in Leicester”
TV chef Rachel Green said “it is important to encourage children to have breakfast because they need a proper start to the day, if they are going to learn properly”
