PRESS RELEASE
24 JUNE 2014
Age is Just a Number for the Singing Policeman
Special police constable Kulbinder Rai is hanging up his policeman’s hat after twenty years so that he can dedicate all of his time to being a musician. Despite receiving major recognition for his long service including medals from the Queen, 59 year old Mr Rai is ready to pursue his passion full-time and launch his singing career with his complete undivided attention.
He has been performing on a part-time basis for the past seven years, and in 2008 he released his first album titled ‘Khangoora’, whilst still working for the police force and as an aerospace engineer. His second album ‘Mr Singh’ came out in 2009 and he has since done shows in major cities around the world including California, Toronto and Mumbai. He has graced the stage with some of Asian music’s biggest stars such as Sukhshinder Shinda, Jazzy B and Rafakat Ali Khan.
As well as following his dreams, Kulbinder is helping other people’s dreams come true by donating a large portion of his earnings to charitable causes. Since his wife was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, and sadly passed away a year and a half later, he has ensured that fundraising plays an important part in what he does. Over the years he has performed at numerous charity concerts to raise money for organisations such as Cancer Research UK, Loros and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Mr Rai will continue to support these charities as a full-time musician, because after taking advice from leading industry professionals, he realised it is now time to give 100% focus to his singing career. He commented: “It was a very tough decision to leave my job because nothing is guaranteed and things change overnight but a lot of people who have been in the industry for many years have been saying that if you want to do something seriously you really have to give it a go. I needed to think about what I want in the future, so from now on it’s going to be music, music, music!”
Next in the pipeline, Kulbinder has an exciting venture coming up; a single that will be out later this year. He expressed: “It’s very very special and it will be released in a big way.”
Big on not having any regrets, he is happy that he will never have to say “What if?” and his dream is to one day work in Bollywood.
“A lot of people are surprised at the age I have come into music, but the feedback I’ve had from many performers and artists is that I’m a role model because I’ve showed that age is no barrier. Whether you want to act, play sport, or do music, as long as you have the passion then you can achieve it. I don’t believe people who think it’s too late– even after 40 you can still fulfil your dreams and ambitions.”
