The High Court has ruled that Leicester will bury the remains of King Richard III in the city’s cathedral.
The Bishop of Leicester The Right Reverend Tim Stevens announced the results this morning at a press conference at the cathedral in front of reporters and television cameras.
He said of the results “we are of course delighted, here in the cathedral, in the diocese, in the city, in the county, we have waited a long time for this, it will lead to a series of major national events centred here and we are now planning for a reinterment to proceed with dignity and honour as soon as it is possible to make the necessary arrangements.”
The Leicester City Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, said, “After the frustration of recent months it is now in the hands of the Cathedral to make proper provision for the re-interment of Richard III, and that his remains would be laid in a tomb fit for a king.”
The Very Reverend David Monteith, Dean of Leicester said “This Christian cathedral set in the heart of this very vibrant and multicultural community has doors which are open to all people and wherever you have sat on the debates surrounding this story, I want to very publicly say that everyone is welcome here, and that we now need to lay this man and this anointed King to rest, and we need to do that as one community and one nation working together to ensure that he is indeed laid with dignity and honour”
