World-renowned ‘Dhol King’ Dr. Gurcharan Mall BEM has once again demonstrated his dedication to humanity by organising and taking part in a special fundraising walk in support of the Midland Langar Seva Society (MLSS).

Known for his powerful beats and deep commitment to peace, Dr. Mall brought a unique rhythm to this year’s MLSS Walk for Humanity on May 24.

The annual event is a ten-mile charity walk that journeys through the streets of Walsall and Birmingham, beginning at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib in Walsall and concluding at Mr. Singh’s in Handsworth, Birmingham. The walk supports MLSS, a non-profit organisation devoted to alleviating hunger and homelessness both across the UK and internationally. Their mission is to provide vital humanitarian aid—offering food and assistance to vulnerable communities in need.

What set this year’s walk apart was Dr. Mall’s impressive feat of carrying his 9kg dhol drum for the entire ten-mile route. The 73-year-old music legend, famed for his energetic performances and enduring spirit, accepted the physical challenge to raise awareness and funds for the cause close to his heart.

Despite the difficulty of the four-hour journey, Dr. Mall completed the walk with determination, raising nearly £1,800—well beyond his initial target of £500.

“It’s more than a physical journey; it’s a stride towards transformative change,” Dr. Mall said. “Every step taken is a step towards alleviating hunger, homelessness and despair. Each step we take directly supports these vital initiatives, enabling us to extend our reach and deepen our impact.”

Dr. Mall credits his longevity and vitality to his lifelong passions for music and exercise, which keep him young at heart and motivated to serve his community.

“Fitness is so important in life and I think it’s something that everybody should take seriously because of the health issues these days,” he tells Pukaar. “I go to the gym, I play dhol and I teach and it all keeps me young at heart.

“Not a day goes by when I am not energised and excited by life.”

The event not only raised crucial funds but also sent a powerful message of unity, compassion, and resilience. It reinforced the belief that through collective action and shared purpose, communities can make a tangible difference in the lives of the most vulnerable.
