Hundreds of people turned out for a street party on Leicester’s St Matthews estate today, to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
People packed into Kamloop Crescent for the party earlier today (Sunday, June 5), where they enjoyed food and music courtesy of a gospel choir and a brass band at the site.
Mike Kapur, Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire was on hand to open the event.
He told Pukaar that it was great to see so many people comes together from all ages and backgrounds.
“It means a lot to the people of St Matthews. For two years we’ve been telling people for most part to stay away from each other while we manage the pandemic, and now we want people to come out, rebuild their communities and enjoy themselves and it’s so fantastic to see so many people here, from all ages and all backgrounds”, he said.
“It’s been a very busy week, but I’m loving every minute of it – just seeing people having a good time in the name of celebrating the Platinum Jubilee. It’s what my role’s all about”, he said of the four-day Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Resident Tamieka Gore attended the event dressed as Queen Elizabeth II herself.
“Every loves the Queen so why not?” she said of her royally fabulous choice of outfit.
“The kids are all here having fun, and whenever I’ve come in, they’ve all been really responsive and even bowing to me, which is really nice”! she added.
“I do admire her (the Queen) for how long she’s been going in her role and reigning England”.
Asked about the energy and spirit of the event, she said: “It’s been brilliant. I’ve loved the energy from everybody in the community, and everyone’s had huge smiles on their faces which is really nice”.
