A Leicester man has been jailed to four years after pleading guilty to a violent robbery and an assault on a woman, which led to her receiving a broken nose.
Jaryu Halliday appeared at Leicester Crown Court for sentencing on Friday (January 20), after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to an assault at the Haymarket in Leicester in March last year.
However, during the hearing, the 25-year-old also decided to plead guilty to an unrelated robbery which took place in Jubilee Square in December.
In March Halliday was involved in a fight with a woman in the shopping centre, the victim’s mother intervened. Halliday then punched the second victim which resulted in her breaking her nose.
In December Halliday, along with two others, approached a 30-year-old man during the afternoon in Jubilee Square and pushed him to the floor where he was kicked multiple times and demands for his phone were made.
Members of the public intervened and the suspects made off. A phone, cash and bank cards were stolen from the victim.
Subsequently CCTV operators in the city were able to track the suspects’ movements which allowed officers to obtain evidence of the bank cards being used in numerous shops during the same afternoon.
A few days later officers arrested Halliday at his home address in the city.
He was sentenced to four years in prison for assault, robbery and two counts of fraud.
DC Josh Evans was the investigating officer for the robbery. He said: “This was a vicious incident in broad daylight in front of many people area. It wasn’t just a robbery; the defendant and his accomplices kicked the victim multiple times too. If it wasn’t for the members of the public intervening the victim may have ended up enduring a far prolonged attack.
“We are pleased Halliday has pleaded guilty to all the offences and we hope this reassures those who were the victims of his crimes that justice has been done.”
