Wowing the audience with its opening night performance, Curve Theatre presents a community production of the smash-hit rock musical Rent.
Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Jonathan Larson’s prize winning musical takes the audience on a journey high on emotions and experiences. Set in the lower east side of New York City, the musical centralises around the lives of filmmaker Mark and his friends, who experience the struggles to make it in the big city.
As Mark and his song-writer flat mate, Roger face losing their apartment, they go through an emotional rollercoaster including falling in love, learning to survive and finding their way during a time when HIV/AIDS is epidemic. Along with Roger’s new love interest Mimi, Mark’s ex Maureen and friend Angel, the youngsters face a number of obstacles, as they strive for success and acceptance in society.
With minimal use of props, the performance is brought to life by a variety of powerful vocal performances, expressing feelings through a narration of thoughts, captivating the audience’s attention with themes including alcohol, drugs and scenes of a sexual nature.
The inspirational story explores a series of life changing events over the course of one year including love, separations, addiction, homelessness, poverty and death as their lives take different paths.
The live musicians set the ambience with the sounds of the drums, keyboards and guitars in sync with the passionate singing performances. The audience are treated to a soundtrack of much-loved and soothing musical songs including La Vie Boheme, Rent, Take Me or Leave Me and Seasons of Love.
Delivering an entertaining performance full of energy, the show came to a close to a huge round of applause and standing ovation from the full auditorium.
A performance not to be missed, Rent will be performed at the Curve Theatre on the 1st, 4th & 7th August 2014.
