World-renowned dhol player and Bhangra pioneer Gurcharan Mall, affectionately known as the ‘Dhol King’, marked a significant milestone with the launch of his highly anticipated memoir at Amrut Restaurant in Leicester on 26 November.
Fans, friends, and fellow artists gathered to celebrate, meet the legendary performer, and receive signed copies, turning the evening into a vibrant celebration of music, culture, and resilience.

At 73, G Mall reflected on more than 57 years dedicated to performing, promoting, and teaching dhol and Bhangra across the globe. With eight world records and 11 lifetime achievement awards to his name, he has long been recognised as one of the most influential figures in global Bhangra—celebrated for his electrifying playing style, boundless energy, and the infectious smile that has lit up stages worldwide.
Born into a poor family in Ludhiana, Punjab, and marginalised because of his caste, G Mall’s rise was anything but straightforward. Yet, through unwavering belief in his talent and an unshakeable passion for music, he overcame significant social and economic barriers to become an international icon.
“These books are for anyone who has ever been told their dreams are out of reach,” G Mall told attendees. “No matter where you begin, you can rise above limitations and follow your passion with relentless determination.”
His memoir, From Rags to Riches: A Journey of Hard Work, Sacrifices, and Success, traces his remarkable journey from a young boy enchanted by the rhythms of Ludhiana to a pioneering force who helped bring Bhangra and the dhol to Western audiences. Now based in Sutton Coldfield near Birmingham, G Mall has redefined dhol performance through his distinctive, high-energy style.

Guests at the launch also heard about G Mall’s extensive work as an ambassador for cultural organisations, including The World Bhangra Council and Kaushalya UK, as well as his many accolades, such as an Honorary Doctorate from the World Peace United Nations University (WPUNU) recognising his outstanding contribution to Punjabi arts.
The launch emphasised G Mall’s lifelong message of resilience, determination, and cultural pride, inspiring attendees to overcome societal barriers and pursue their creative passions. All proceeds from book sales on the night, totalling £715, were generously donated to the Leicester Lord Mayor’s charity, adding a meaningful charitable dimension to the celebration.
The book was officially unveiled by Councillor Manjula Sood, Assistant City Mayor, High Baliff and represented the Lord Mayor, who praised G Mall’s legacy.
“It is a privilege to launch this book,” she said. “Gurcharan Mall is a true legend—an inspiration who has shaped generations. His humility is remarkable, and seeing him celebrated so wholeheartedly is a joy.”
Grace Richardson, the newly crowned Miss England, also attended as guest of honour.
“As a fellow musician, I absolutely adore the story being shared tonight,” she said. “Sitting beside such an inspiring and extraordinary man is an honour. This launch is a celebration not just of his achievements, but of the spirit and joy he brings to people everywhere.”

Long-time admirer Sukhi Bart offered heartfelt praise for the Dhol King’s impact.
“He has inspired so many of us within the Bhangra world,” Bart said. “He didn’t just play the dhol—he made it famous. His greatest gift is bringing people together through music. I remember seeing him perform and being blown away; I’d never seen a dhol player with such energy. He makes you want to dance, to feel alive. His legacy is enormous, and it will continue for generations. Thank you for the music, and thank you for the beats.”
The evening concluded with G Mall raising the roof once again, delivering a powerful performance to an appreciative, packed restaurant—proof that even after decades at the top, the Dhol King’s rhythm and spirit remain as exhilarating as ever.
