Thousands celebrate Diwali in Leicester

Thousands of people visited the Golden Mile and Cossington Park to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

Diwali is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu faith as it marks the end of the Hindu year and signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, hope over despair and knowledge over ignorance.

Known as the festival of lights, Diwali is renowned for its vibrancy and colours, often in the form of bright lights.

Leicester is believed to have the biggest Diwali event outside India and people from across the globe visit the city for the celebration.

Councillor Manjula Sood MBE (Labour) from Leicester City Council, helped organise the event and told Pukaar News:

“Leicester boasts the largest celebration outside of India.

“(Because of Diwali) Leicester is the on the global map.”
