Indian Visa Centre Opens in Leicester

The first Indian Visa Centre in Leicester was officially opened in the city on Friday in a lavish ceremony.

The 20-year campaign to establish a Visa Centre in Leicester has come to an end with the opening of the service at the Peepul Centre, Leicester. The Centre will be initially opened once a week each Friday between 10am-2pm and provided there is sufficient demand it will open on additional days.

Local councillors and dignitaries attended the opening with Leicester East MP Keith Vaz and Mr V S Ramalingam, Consul General of the Indian High Commission cutting the ribbon.  Mr Vaz said: “This is a big day for Leicester. I have been smiling all day!

With the Home Office Biometric Centre in the city and now a new Indian visa centre, Leicester is the visa application hub of the East Midlands.

Mr Vaz concluded: “It’s unbelievable. People have already applied. I have applied and I think this will only increase with the number of people applying.”

Those in attendance were also hopeful that the opening of this new centre will take the pressure off the other two centres as people from outside of the city from Loughborough, Coventry, and Northampton, will be able to come to Leicester which will also bring in more trade for the local businesses, particularly on the Golden Mile.
