The inaugural Shivani Raja MP Community Cricket Cup brought residents from across Leicester together for a memorable day of sport, food, friendship and fundraising in support of LOROS at Rushes Fields Recreation Ground in Harrison on Monday 31 August.
The community event was organised to provide an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to meet, enjoy cricket and celebrate the cultural diversity of the city. The tournament featured a series of five-over matches, with mixed-age and mixed-gender teams taking part in a friendly and inclusive competition.
Members of a local walking group also joined the tournament, demonstrating the wide appeal of the event and helping to create a welcoming atmosphere for participants and spectators alike. The competition was open to everyone, regardless of age, experience or background, with the emphasis firmly placed on participation and community involvement.
Shivani Raja MP formally opened the tournament. The first team to arrive at the pitch was welcomed by the lively sound of dhol drums, setting the tone for a colourful and celebratory day.
To mark the first staging of the competition, every participant received a certificate and medal in recognition of their involvement. The presentations provided an opportunity to thank those who had taken part and celebrate the contribution made by players, volunteers and organisers.
Alongside the cricket, visitors were able to enjoy a selection of vegetarian food from local stalls. Popular dishes included pani puri and samosas, providing a taste of the region’s rich culinary traditions while also supporting local food vendors.
The event also included a charity raffle, featuring prizes generously donated by local businesses. The fundraiser encouraged visitors to support a good cause while highlighting the generosity and community spirit of local organisations and businesses.
Members of the Leicester Lankans community played an important role in organising and supporting the tournament. They assisted players throughout the day and helped ensure that the matches ran smoothly. Representatives from the Leicester and Rutland Cricket Foundation also attended, providing equipment and practical support for the competition.
Rain interrupted play on several occasions, but the matches continued despite the changeable weather. Players and spectators remained enthusiastic, and the wet conditions did not dampen the positive atmosphere. The determination of those involved reflected the strong community spirit that organisers hoped the tournament would encourage.
Organisers described the cricket cup as a celebration of Leicester’s cultural diversity. By bringing together people from different faiths, communities and backgrounds, the event demonstrated how sport can help build relationships and create shared experiences.
